Ajmal Sabu

Biography:

Ajmal Sabu is a talented Indian filmmaker who works across cinematography and editing, contributing to the visual identity and storytelling of contemporary Malayalam cinema. His career reflects a strong interest in the technical and creative sides of filmmaking. With training in animation and visual effects, he developed an understanding of how images are constructed and shaped, knowledge that supports his work both behind the camera and in the editing room.

Ajmal first attracted attention through trailer editing and other visual projects before entering feature-film cinematography. His work on Meow marked an important step in his journey as a cinematographer. He subsequently worked on films including Solomante Theneechakal and Thrishanku, further developing his approach to framing, lighting, camera movement, and visual storytelling.

His cinematography for Premalu brought additional recognition, with the film’s youthful energy and urban setting supported by a lively, natural visual style. In Bethlehem Kudumba Unit (2026), he created a distinctive atmosphere through carefully considered lighting, colour choices, natural settings, and compositions that helped bring the film’s community and characters to life.

Ajmal also continues to work as an editor, demonstrating his understanding of how individual shots come together to create a coherent story. His editing work on Scene, directed by Jithu Madhavan and starring Suriya, represents another significant collaboration. Across both disciplines, Ajmal’s creative focus is on visual storytelling and making the technical aspects of filmmaking serve the narrative.
