Alangadu Ramamurthi Srinivasan, widely known as A. R. Srinivasan or A. R. S., is a versatile Indian actor known for his work in stage, television, and film. Born on April 8, 1933, in Madras (now Chennai), he was introduced to the world of theater by the renowned dramatist YG Parthasarathy. Srinivasan’s illustrious career spans over five decades, during which he has earned accolades such as the Kalaimamani and Central Sangeet Natak Academy Puraskar awards.
Srinivasan’s early life saw him pursue a career in law after completing his education. He worked for Philips and was also an accomplished cricketer, representing clubs like Sea Hawks and Madras South Zone. Interestingly, he was a classmate of Cho Ramaswamy during his time in law college.
In 1962, Srinivasan’s life took a dramatic turn when Y. G. Parthasarathy noticed his talent during a cultural show and invited him to join his theater group, United Amateur Artists (UAA). After some initial hesitation, Srinivasan became an integral part of UAA and continued working with the group for more than five decades. Although he made his film debut in 1964 with a role in the Telugu movie “Raman Parasuraman,” his filmography primarily consists of supporting roles, often portraying characters such as police officers or Jesuit priests.
Additionally, starting in the 1980s, Srinivasan found success on television, playing prominent roles in television operas and presenting documentaries. Even today, he remains active in the entertainment industry, with supporting roles in television soaps like “Aval” and “Suryaputri,” while occasionally performing on stage.
