Kanukuntla Subhash Chandrabose, an Indian lyricist and playback singer specializing in Telugu cinema, made his debut as a lyricist in 1995 with the movie “Taj Mahal.” Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has crafted lyrics for approximately 3600 songs featured in over 850 films. Chandrabose achieved remarkable recognition, winning both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for his song “Naatu Naatu” from the film “RRR” in 2022. He has also received two Nandi Awards, two Filmfare Awards, and three SIIMA Awards for his exceptional work as a lyricist.
Chandrabose was born in the village of Challagariga in Warangal district, Andhra Pradesh (now part of Bhupalpally district, Telangana). He completed his high school education there and is the youngest of four siblings. His father worked as a primary school teacher. Chandrabose holds a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad. Early in his career, he attempted a singing career with Doordarshan but did not find success. He subsequently made the transition to become a lyricist.
His entry into the film industry was through the movie “Taj Mahal” (1995), directed by Muppalaneni Shiva. Music director M. M. Srilekha played a pivotal role in helping him secure his first song in the film, titled “Manchu Kondallona Chandramaa.” It was during this time that he adopted the screen name Chandrabose, following the advice of his first director, Muppalaneni Siva.
Chandrabose is also known for his personal life as he is married to Suchitra, a choreographer in the Telugu film industry.
