Ananthu

Ananthakrishnan, fondly known as Ananthu, was a distinguished Indian screenwriter renowned for his work in Tamil cinema, often in collaboration with the legendary K. Balachander. Hailing from the village of Kandiramanickam near Karaikudi and Thirupathur, Ananthu’s journey into the world of cinema was shaped by his early life experiences. Born to Thiruvengadam, who worked with the South Indian Corporation, Ananthu pursued his education in B.S.C. Chemistry. His professional trajectory took a turn when he served as a demonstrator at colleges before transitioning into a clerical role at the A.G.S. Office, where fate led him to cross paths with Balachander.

Ananthu’s association with Balachander burgeoned as he delved into the realms of screenwriting and dialogue composition, becoming an integral part of Balachander’s creative team. He lent his talent to numerous plays, enriching them with his adept dialogue writing skills and active participation in story discussions.

Beyond his collaboration with Balachander, Ananthu also lent his expertise to director C. Rudraiah, notably contributing to the critically acclaimed film “Aval Appadithan,” which Rudraiah dedicated to him. Additionally, Ananthu collaborated as a sub-dialogue writer with Chitralaya Gopu on films like “Anubhavam Pudhumai” and “Galatta Kalyanam,” directed by C. V. Rajendran. His multifaceted talents even led him to step in front of the camera, showcasing his acting prowess in “Galatta Kalyanam” alongside stalwarts like Sivaji Ganesan and Jayalalitha.

In 1991, Ananthu ventured into direction with “Sigaram,” featuring notable actors such as S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Anand Babu, Radha, and Ramya Krishnan. His directorial debut was lauded for its realistic portrayal and profound dialogue, cementing his position in the annals of parallel cinema.

Ananthu’s contributions to Tamil cinema, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera, remain integral to its rich tapestry, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to inspire filmmakers and cinephiles alike.
