In an exclusive interview, the filmmaker discussed collaborating with Anurag Kashyap and developing a movie about transgender people.
Speaking on his experience assisting Anurag Kashyap as a director on one of his films, he said, “It was not at all difficult. The appeal of Anurag Kashyap is that everyone who has collaborated with him has gone on to create fantastic films. He creates a culture around that. He offers duty along with a degree of freedom. When you work with him, you are free to say whatever you want. He has been my steadfast supporter. It was fun having him around. He is a talented actor.
“See you don’t want to hurt anyone,” he stated while discussing filming a movie on a transgender person. We had spoken about not making the movie preachy or cliched. This community has a lot of depth. Since the time of the Ramayana, they have been around. They are only known to us as guests who attend our events to offer badhai. But we wanted to demonstrate their way of life and activities. We have very honestly demonstrated all of that.
In the crime drama Haddi, Nawazuddin, Anurag Kashyap, and Ila Arun all have significant roles. In the movie, Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrays two roles, one of which is transgender. The movie premiered on ZEE5 on September 7.
