3 Body Problem

Story:

The American science fiction television show 3 Body Problem was developed by Alexander Woo, D. B. Weiss, and David Benioff. The Chinese novel series Remembrance of Earth’s Past, written by former computer engineer Liu Cixin, has been adapted three times. The first volume of the series, titled The Three-Body Problem, is based on a classical physics problem involving Newton’s equations of motion and gravity. On March 21, 2024, Netflix launched the first season, which consists of eight episodes.

The show revolves around a wide cast of humans, primarily scientists, who come into contact with an alien society, posing many risks and causing significant changes for humanity. 3 Body Problem is mostly in English with some Mandarin, although the two previous adaptations—the live-action Three-Body (2023) and the animation The Three-Body Problem in Minecraft (2014–2020)—were both fully in the original Mandarin of the novels. Additionally, it incorporates foreign characters and settings, especially from China and the United Kingdom, into portions of the original Chinese setting.

This was the first TV show that Benioff and Weiss had worked on since the end of their 2011–2019 series Game of Thrones. Reviews were favorable, praising the production values, ambition, and cast. The show was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. The show received a second and third season renewal in May 2024. In 2026, the second season is scheduled to debut.

After witnessing her father’s death during a Cultural Revolution battle, Chinese astronomer Ye Wenjie finds herself in hot water with the authorities. Because of her scientific training, she is assigned to a covert military facility during the Cold War, competing with other nations to establish contact with extraterrestrial life. She makes a decision there that affects the future of humanity. A government detective and a group of friends known as the “Oxford Five” are drawn into an extraterrestrial mystery in modern-day London after a string of unexplained suicides and science-averse incidents.
