Siddharth, R. Madhavan, and Nayanthara play the lead roles in the film “Test”, directed by S. Sashikanth. Though the film was completed in 2023 and was initially planned for a theatrical release in 2024, it skipped theaters due to various reasons and was released directly on Netflix. Let’s see how much this thrilling drama manages to engage the audience!
Test Movie Story: Saravanan (Madhavan) is a scientist whose dream is to invent an alternative fuel to petrol and diesel. But to make that happen, he needs to pay a bribe of Rs. 5 crores. Kumudha (Nayanthara), struggling for her children’s future, sees medical treatment as a last hope and needs Rs. 5 lakhs for it. Arjun Venkataraman (Siddharth) is a senior and sincere cricketer nearing retirement who wants to prove his worth in his final Test match. These three cross paths unexpectedly, leading to a series of life-changing events. What connects them? How do their lives impact one another? That’s what the film “Test” explores.
Performances: Madhavan clearly dominates the film with his performance. He brilliantly portrays the variations in his character in his unique style, especially impressing in the climax with his subtle negative shades.
Nayanthara also shines, effortlessly handling two contrasting emotional tones. Siddharth delivers a mature performance as a man torn between ambition and emotion, making his role a crucial part of the narrative. Supporting actors like Vinay Varma, Meera Jasmine, and Aadukalam Murugadoss do justice to their roles.
Technical Aspects: Test boasts solid performances from Madhavan, Nayanthara, and Siddharth, with impressive visuals by Viraj Singh and a good score by Shakthisree Gopalan. However, the film’s slow-paced narrative and lack of emotional depth hinder its impact. Despite having a strong core idea and a stellar cast, the screenplay lacks the grip needed to hold OTT audiences. Director Sashikanth’s approach to treat it as a slow drama on a big canvas feels like a missed opportunity, making Test an underwhelming watch overall.
Analysis: With a stellar cast like Nayanthara, Siddharth, Madhavan, and Meera Jasmine, audiences naturally expect a gripping drama. While Test has an interesting core concept, the emotional depth is lacking. As a result, despite its potential, the film fails to hold viewers’ attention over its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, making the weak emotional execution its biggest drawback.
Verdict: Test has an interesting idea and top-tier cast, but slow pace and weak emotional impact dilute its potential. A missed opportunity.
Bottom Line: Great cast, weak emotional connect.
