TheatreSelfiee is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama action film directed by Raj Mehta, produced by Dharma Productions, Magic Frames, Prithviraj Productions, and Cape of Good Films, and distributed by Star Studios. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the key roles, with Diana Penty and Nushratt Bharuccha providing support. The film is a remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Driving Licence, and it centres on a rivalry between an RTO Inspector and a popular actor.
Filming began in March 2022. It was released in theatres on February 24, 2023. Critics gave the film mixed to good reviews. The film, however, was a big commercial flop, grossing only 23.63 crore at the box office.
Plot
Om Prakash Aggarwal, a Bhopal-based Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), is a huge fan of film actor Vijay Kumar. Vijay is planning to travel to the United States for his wife Naina’s diagnosis, postponing the filming of his next project, which has already ran over budget. With the climax still to be shot on an Indian Navy leased area, the crew discovers that Vijay’s driving licence, which is required for approval, is stolen. The producer is furious because the picture needs to be completed as soon as possible. Vijay cannot apply for a duplicate licence because of a clerical error while transferring across RTO buildings, as acquiring a new licence would take time. As a result, Vijay’s politician friend meets Om for the first time, speeding the operation. Om agrees to award the licence without even having Vijay attend the test. In exchange, he summons Vijay to the RTO to meet him in person and as proof in the event of an investigation.
Meanwhile, Vijay’s professional opponent Suraj Diwan is planning to suppress Vijay’s competition by occult means. Even though he is aware that travelling to the RTO may reveal information about his visit, Vijay reluctantly accepts, hoping that an unannounced visit requires less visibility. When he arrives, he notices TV stations all throughout the premises, surrounded by Vijay’s peons. Vimla tells a reporter that Vijay, an ardent driver, has been driving without a licence. The story spreads, and an enraged Vijay scolds Om for the leak in front of his son and superiors before leaving. Om, enraged, tells the press that Vijay was arrogant and wanted a licence without going through the proper channels.Vijay’s reputation has been severely harmed, and to make matters worse, the head of Suraj’s followers community plots a hit-and-run attack on Om. He also has a masked group throw stones at his house, and Om’s son gets a brain injury, leading Om to suspect that Vijay’s men were responsible.
Meanwhile, Vijay regretfully cancels his trip to the United States at the producer’s request. A angry Vijay phones Om and threatens him while bringing his son to the hospital, confirming Om’s conviction. Om and his wife Minty accuse Vijay during the police investigation, but Vijay is not charged since his role was inconclusive. Om and his family stage a Satyagraha in front of Vijay’s house, where journalists and fans also gather. In a statement to the media, Vijay claims that Om is a crazed admirer and a kind of stalker who derives satisfaction from disrupting his idol’s life. He displays Om’s fan notes as proof and says that he has opted to take the test under Om’s supervision. The computer-based test is substituted with a direct question-and-answer session with Om after Vijay obtains permission for an open test that may be watched by the media and televised live. Despite Om’s challenging and unique questions, Vijay passes the learner’s test.
Om’s son gets bullied at school by Vijay’s fan-boys. Om resolves not to send him to school until Vijay has failed, and he is determined to fail him with the utmost discretion. Meanwhile, Naina requires surgery, and a flight is scheduled to arrive as soon as the test is over. On the day of the practical assessment, Vijay completes the “H test” without incident, but Om fails him by pointing out minor errors. His boss overrules his judgement, which passes Vijay. Om delays the follow-up “road test” until noon.He postpones the test by two days at noon, which happens to be Naina’s surgery day. Vijay declares to onlookers and the media that he will no longer drive since Om has completely abused his position, and that he would resign from acting if this further disturbs his life. The fans are enraged and begin lynching Om, but Vijay protects him and exits the scene.
They clear up the ambiguities on the way. Om says that Vijay’s licence was in the present box that Vijay had tossed earlier in the RTO office. Vijay invites Om and his family to his home, where he chastises Suraj and Vimla for their errors. Two days later, on his way to the airport, Vijay speaks with the press about their reunion and announces that he has received his driver’s licence. Vijay then drives to the airport in his automobile.
