TheatreAmar Kaushik is the director of the 2024 Indian Hindi-language comedy horror film Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank, which translates to “Woman 2: Terror of the Headless.” Niren Bhatt wrote the screenplay, which Maddock Films and Jio Studios jointly produced. It is the follow-up to Stree (2018) and the fifth book in the Maddock Supernatural Universe.
Starring in the movie are Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi, Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, and Aparshakti Khurana. The story centers on Vicky and his pals as they battle Sarkata, a headless evil force that is kidnapping Chanderi’s ladies.
In October 2018, Kaushik indicated that he would be interested in creating a Stree sequel. Rao announced in February 2022 that the film was under development, but the original authors and producers, Raj & DK, had left the project due to disagreements with producer Dinesh Vijan about franchise rights. Consequently, Bhatt assumed the role of writer.
Dinesh Vijan and Jyoti Deshpande made the official announcement of the sequel in April 2023. The main photography started in July of the same year and ended in mid-2024, mostly in Chanderi and Bihar. Justin Varghese wrote the background score, while Sachin-Jigar composed the soundtrack album. Jishnu Bhattacharjee handled the cinematography, while Hemanti Sarkar handled the editing.
On August 15, 2024, which happened to be Independence Day, Stree 2 was released in theaters all around the world to great reviews from critics. After earning more than ₹863 crore (US$100 million) at the box office globally, the movie is now the second highest-grossing Indian movie of all time, the highest-grossing Hindi movie of 2024, and the ninth highest-grossing Hindi movie overall.
Plot
Beginning where the first movie ended, Stree is going to return to Chanderi when she sees a statue of herself at the town entrance that the villagers erected as a memorial with the words, O Stree Raksha Karna (which translates to “Oh Woman Protect us”), and decides to leave Chanderi.
A few years later, Sarkata, a headless ghost who kidnaps women at night and pulls them into a terrifying parallel reality, presents Chanderi with a new threat. Unaware of the ghost’s existence, the villagers wrongly think the vanished ladies had moved on to more promising situations.
Vicky often imagines the nameless girl in front of him since he is still in love with her. Rudra, meantime, gets an anonymous letter with enigmatic words Vo Aayega (transl. “He will come”) and missing pages from the Chanderi Puran. Vicky is warned about it by a worried Rudra, but she is ignored.
Bittu’s love Chitti is abducted one night by Sarkata, also known as The Headless. The presence of the ghost is attested to by a stoner beggar who saw the kidnapping. Investigating the shredded pages of the Chanderi Puran, Vicky, Bittu, and Rudra learn the origin of Sarkata. They discover that Sarkata is the angry ghost of Chandrabhan, the formerly village chief who detested progressive women and was a drunk and womanizer. When Stree was a courtesan, he killed her by burning her husband alive in front of her daughter and beheading her.
After making a reappearance as a ghost, Stree decapitated Chandrabhan and his companions and buried their remains. Sarkata has returned to target progressive women after Stree left Chanderi. The companions seek find Jana in Delhi, who was formerly possessed by Stree, after realizing they need Stree’s assistance to beat Sarkata.
Living with his cousin Bhaskar, Jana is enticed to return to Chanderi with the promise of a theatrical production. When Jana learns the true cause, she unwillingly consents to help. Sarkata attacks Jana and almost kills her while she searches the old fort for Stree. Jana then sees visions of the parallel universe where the women who have been abducted are being held hostage.
The gang is astonished when Jana comes back to life because they thought he was dead, and Sarkata follows them as they barely escape the fort. She emerges while Sarkata terrorizes the town, and she uses the powers of Stree’s braid connected to her hair to fight Sarkata and save the group. The terrified women of the community assume that Sarkata’s appearance is the result of Vicky’s defeating Stree.
Vicky is persuaded that he is the best person for the job by her sincere soul, but they still put pressure on him to accept responsibility for the new threat. She gives Vicky a knife made of magic and tells him to chop off half of Sarkata’s head with it.
The trio plans a dance performance by Rudra’s lover Shama in order to trap Sarkata. Vicky sees Sarkata during the performance, but she is unable to cut his head off. Every man in the room, with the exception of Vicky, Rudra, and Jana, is owned by Sarkata. After that, Bittu and the other possessed males take control of the ladies in the town after Sarkata kidnaps Shama.
In their desperation to find a cure, the trio pursues the anonymous letter’s tip to a mental health facility, where they encounter a Sarkata descendent. The man discloses that only a creature that is half of both—neither wholly human nor fully animal—can beat Sarkata. With this knowledge, She creates a creature that can penetrate Sarkata’s lair by fusing her body with Vicky’s. Vicky and She encounter Sarkata within the lair. Vicky uses the magical dagger to chop Sarkata’s head in two, but each head that is severed grows back into several new heads. When Bhaskar shows there, they are overpowered and he assaults Sarkata.
