American actress Winona Laura Horowitz, better known by her stage name Winona Ryder, was born on October 29, 1971. After becoming well-known for her eccentric roles in the late 1980s, she found fame in the 1990s with her more tragic roles. Among Ryder’s many honours are nominations for two Academy Awards, a Grammy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe.
After making her screen debut in Lucas (1986), Ryder became well-known for her role in the comedy Beetlejuice (1988). Then came key roles in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Mermaids (1990), and Heathers (1989). Her roles as a socialite in The Age of Innocence (1993) and Jo March in Little Women (1994) won her two consecutive Oscar nominations: Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress. She went on to star in the following films: Mr. Deeds (2002), Alien Resurrection (1997), Celebrity (1998), How to Make an American Quilt (1995), The Crucible (1996), Reality Bites (1994), and Girl, Interrupted (1999).
After receiving a lot of bad press from her arrest for shoplifting in 2001, Ryder took a hiatus from acting in the early 2000s. She then had a few cameos in films like Star Trek (2009), Black Swan (2010), and The Dilemma (2011). In the 2010 Hallmark television movie When Love Is Not Enough, she played Lois Wilson. She has been nominated for her third Golden Globe for her role as Joyce Byers in the Netflix series Stranger Things since 2016. Since then, she has acted in the comedic horror sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) and the HBO miniseries The Plot Against America (2020).
