Ngô Thanh Vân was born in Trà Vinh, Vietnam, on February 26, 1979. With two older brothers, she is the youngest. Her family threw her in a boat when she was ten years old in order to flee the communist regime in Vietnam. Together with her aunt, Vân landed in Norway in 1990 as a boat refugee. She later became a citizen of Norway by naturalisation.
