Along with Harrison Ford, Stallone is one of only two performers in history to have starred in a No. 1 box office picture for six straight decades.
After arriving in New York City in 1969 and struggling for several years as an actor, Stallone eventually found success in movies like The Lords of Flatbush (1974). In 1976, he began to enjoy his greatest critical and financial
Success when he played boxer Rocky Balboa in the first installment of the popular Rocky franchise, which he also wrote. He was the third actor in history to receive two Academy Award nominations
For Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor, in 1977. In First Blood (1982), he played the PTSD-stricken soldier John Rambo, a character he would go on to play in five more Rambo films (1982–2019).
Actor Stallone went on to become one of Hollywood’s highest-paid figures from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, starring in action movies like Cobra (1986), Tango and Cash (1989), Cliffhanger (1993), Demolition Man (1993), and The Specialist (1994). In 1984, he was bestowed with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Following the success of Rocky Balboa (2006) and Rambo (2008), Stallone embarked on a new film franchise, The Expendables (2010–present), in which he played the mercenary Barney Ross. He starred in the box office hit Escape Plan in 2013 and made appearances in its follow-ups.
He made a comeback to Rocky in 2015 with Creed, a film in which a retired Rocky trains Donnie Creed, the son of old adversary Apollo Creed. After Stallone was nominated for the same part in the Academy Awards forty years earlier, the picture earned him widespread acclaim, his first Golden Globe Award, and a third Academy Award nomination. He has been a cast member of the Paramount+ crime series Tulsa King since 2022.
On July 6, 1946, Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born in the Manhattan borough of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen district. His parents, Francesco “Frank” Stallone Sr. (1919–2011) and Jacqueline “Jackie” Stallone (née Labofish; 1921–2020), were promoters of women’s professional wrestling.
His father was an Italian immigrant from Gioia del Colle who came to the United States in the 1930s, and his mother was an American from Washington, D.C. of Breton French and Ukrainian Jewish background Frank Stallone, an actor and singer, is his younger brother.
His birth name is listed in many Stallone publications as “Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone.” His mother revealed in an interview that she gave him the name “Tyrone” at first because she loved the actor Tyrone Power, but Stallone’s father changed it to “Sylvester.”
When he was younger, his friends called him “Stinky,” so he decided to drop the “Binky” moniker and choose Mike or Michael instead. He typically abbreviated his middle name “Gardenzio” to “Enzio,” which is a variation of his Italian given name “Gaudenzio.”
Due to difficulties during Stallone’s delivery, his mother’s obstetricians had to use two sets of forceps, which resulted in the unintentional severing of a nerve. He developed a characteristic snarl and slurred speech as a result of the paralysis of the lower left half of his face, including his lip, tongue, and chin. Consequently, he experienced bullying during his early years, which he overcame by participating in bodybuilding and theater.
He was raised in foster and boarding homes for a portion of his early years before returning to Maryland at the age of five to live with his family. His father opened a beauty school in Washington, D.C., his mother’s hometown, at the beginning of the 1950s, and moved the family there.
His mother founded Barbella’s, a women’s gym, in 1954. After his parents divorced when he was eleven, he first lived with his father, but when he was fifteen, he moved to Philadelphia to live with his remarried mother.
Before entering Miami Dade College, Stallone attended Charlotte Hall Military Academy in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, then Notre Dame Academy and Abraham Lincoln High School in Philadelphia. He studied at the American College of Switzerland for two years, from September 1965 to June 1967.
From 1967 to 1969, he went back to the United States to pursue a degree in drama at the University of Miami.(26] In 1998, Stallone received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the University of Miami, having requested that his acting credits and life experiences be accepted in lieu of the remaining credits required for graduation.
