Subhash Kapoor is a screenwriter and director from India. After working as a political journalist, he rose to fame as a director of satirical comedic dramas, including Jolly LLB (2013), Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010), and Jolly LLB 2 (2017). After earning his master’s degree in Hindi literature, Kapoor began working as a political journalist covering North India in Delhi in the 1990s. After his short film won praise in 2001, he began producing commercial shorts, documentaries, and ad films before relocating to Mumbai in 2006.
Kapoor directed his first feature film, Say Salaam India, in 2007. Despite receiving favorable reviews from reviewers, the movie did not do well at the box office. In 2010, he directed his second project, Phas Gaye Re Obama, a satire that included a number of comedians. The movie did well in India and was both commercially and critically acclaimed. The unexpected success of the movie prompted Kapoor to start working on his next project. In 2013, Kapoor released Jolly LLB, a courtroom drama with a humorous twist that starred Arshad Warsi, Amrita Rao, and Boman Irani. The movie came out on March 15, 2013.
