Shawn Robert Ashmore (born October 7, 1979) is a Canadian actor known for his portrayal of Bobby Drake, also known as Iceman, in the X-Men film series. He has also played notable roles such as Jake in the TV series Animorphs, Agent Mike Weston in The Following, Eric in the horror film The Ruins, Sam Spencer in ABC’s Conviction, Wesley Evers in The Rookie, and Lamplighter in the Amazon Prime series The Boys. In addition to acting in films and television, Ashmore has lent his voice and likeness to video games, playing Jack Joyce in Quantum Break (2016) and Conrad in Man of Medan (2019). His portrayal of Terry Fox in the film Terry earned him a Gemini Award nomination. He has an identical twin brother, Aaron Ashmore, who is also an actor.
Born in Richmond, British Columbia, Ashmore was raised in St. Albert, Alberta, and Brampton, Ontario. He attended Earnscliffe Senior Public School and Turner Fenton Secondary School. His parents are Linda (a homemaker) and Rick Ashmore (a manufacturing engineer). His twin brother Aaron has also pursued acting, often playing twins in films alongside Shawn but also taking on individual roles. Notably, Aaron is slightly taller and often gets cast in more antagonistic roles, while Shawn is typically chosen for “nice guy” characters. The brothers share a tattoo on their wrists, “GMA” (Good Man Ashmore), inspired by their grandfather’s similar tattoo.
Ashmore gained widespread recognition for his role as Iceman in X-Men and its sequels X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. He reprised the role in the animated series The Super Hero Squad Show and provided voice work for X-Men: The Official Game. He also starred as Cadet Major Brad Rigby in Disney Channel’s Cadet Kelly (2002) and had a guest role in Smallville as Eric Summers, years before his brother was cast as Jimmy Olsen.
His early TV work includes lead roles in Animorphs as Jake and In a Heartbeat as Tyler Connell. In 2004, he played the lead role of Ged, a young wizard, in the SciFi Channel miniseries Legend of Earthsea, opposite actors like Danny Glover, Kristin Kreuk, and Isabella Rossellini. In 2005, Ashmore starred in a CTV biopic about Terry Fox’s historic run across Canada. He later appeared in horror films like The Ruins (2008) and Frozen (2010).
Ashmore continued to build his career with roles in The Day (2011) and the television thriller The Following, where he starred alongside Kevin Bacon. In 2014, he reprised his role as Iceman in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
In 2016, he played Jack Joyce in the Microsoft Studios video game Quantum Break, providing voice acting and motion capture for the character. That same year, he starred as Sam Spencer in the legal drama Conviction, which was filmed in Toronto. In 2020, he joined The Boys in a recurring role as Lamplighter.
On the personal front, Ashmore married film executive Dana Renee Wasdin in 2012 after meeting on the set of Frozen. The couple has one son, born in 2017.
