Sean John Combs is an American rapper, record producer, and record executive who was born on November 4, 1969. His stage name is Diddy (formerly Puff Daddy and P. Diddy). Combs, a Harlem native, worked as a talent director at Uptown Records before founding his own record label, Bad Boy Records, in 1993. Usher, Mary J. Blige, and the Notorious B.I.G. are among the musicians he is recognised with discovering and developing.
No Way Out (1997), Combs’s first studio album, sold over 7 million copies in the US and reached the top of the Billboard 200. “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” and “I’ll Be Missing You” were two of its singles that peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100; the latter was the first hip-hop song to do so. Combs became the first solo artist to take his place at the top of the chart after making a guest appearance on “Mo Money Mo Problems”. Forever (1999) and The Saga Continues… (2001), his second and third albums, both reached number two in the United States. He became the first rapper to have five US number-one hits with the collaborative singles “Bump, Bump, Bump” (2002) and “Shake Ya Tailfeather” (2003).
Combs, one of the richest musicians in the world, led Forbes’ annual hip-hop rich list in both 2014 and 2017. Three Grammy Awards, three BET Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards are among his honours. In addition to starring in the films Made, Monster’s Ball (both 2001), and Get Him to the Greek (2010), he has produced various media, such as the reality TV show Making the Band. Combs started the apparel company Sean John in 1998, and after being nominated in 2000, he was awarded Menswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2004. In addition to co-founding the digital television network Revolt in 2013, he was a brand ambassador for the spirits company Cîroc from 2007 to 2023.
