Rosario Dawson

Actress
Born : 09/05/1979
Birth Place : New York City, U.S.
Father : Patrick C. Harris
Mother : Isabel Celeste

Biography:

Rosario Dawson was born on May 9, 1979, in New York City. Her mother, Isabel Celeste, has Puerto Rican, Taíno, Cuban, and African heritage and was only 17 when Rosario was born. Dawson’s biological father, Patrick C. Harris, was never married to Isabel. When Rosario was a year old, her mother married Greg Dawson, a construction worker. The family initially lived in a reclaimed building on East 13th Street through an affordable-housing initiative, and later relocated to Garland, Texas.

Dawson made her first on-screen appearance as a child with a small role on Sesame Street. At 15, she was discovered sitting on the front stoop of her building by photographer Larry Clark and writer Harmony Korine, who cast her in the controversial 1995 film Kids. This launched her career, leading to roles in both independent films and major studio projects, including He Got Game, Men in Black II, and Rent.

In 1998, she recorded the introductory voice-over for Prince’s remixed version of “1999,” offering a spoken reflection on the world as the millennium approached. She later appeared in the Chemical Brothers’ music video for “Out of Control” and performed spoken-word segments in OutKast’s track “She Lives in My Lap.”

In 2001, Dawson played Valerie Brown in Josie and the Pussycats and appeared in Ethan Hawke’s directorial debut, Chelsea Walls.

She starred opposite Edward Norton in Spike Lee’s 25th Hour (2002), and that same year gained wider mainstream visibility as Laura Vasquez in Men in Black II, which became a career milestone.

Dawson appeared in The Rundown (2003) with Dwayne Johnson and Sean William Scott, and in Oliver Stone’s Alexander (2004), portraying Roxana, Alexander the Great’s wife. Her scenes, including a controversial nude sequence, attracted considerable attention. She made her stage debut in 2005 as Julia in the Public Theater’s “Shakespeare in the Park” production of Two Gentlemen of Verona.

In 2005, Dawson portrayed Mimi Marquez in the film adaptation of the musical Rent, replacing Daphne Rubin-Vega, who was pregnant. Her performance earned her the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture. She also appeared as Gail in Sin City and had a deleted scene in Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects.

Dawson played Becky in Clerks II (2006), later explaining in the documentary Back to the Well that the infamous donkey-show scene convinced her to take the role. In the same year, she co-created and co-wrote the comic-book miniseries Occult Crimes Taskforce, which she promoted at San Diego Comic-Con in 2007. She starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, part of the Grindhouse double feature, and produced and acted in Descent with Talia Lugacy. On July 7, 2007, she presented during the U.S. segment of the Live Earth event.

In 2008, she co-starred with Will Smith in Seven Pounds and appeared in Eagle Eye. That year she also starred in the online sci-fi series Gemini Division and voiced Officer Delondre Baines in Afterworld. She hosted Saturday Night Live on January 17, 2009, and voiced Artemis in the animated Wonder Woman film.

In 2009, she appeared in The People Speak, based on Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, and voiced Velvet Von Black in Rob Zombie’s The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. She also sang on Kasabian’s track “West Ryder Silver Bullet.”

In 2010, Dawson played Persephone in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and starred in the thriller Unstoppable. She appeared in Gimme Shelter (2013) and in Danny Boyle’s Trance, where her full-frontal nudity sparked considerable commentary—Dawson stated that it was essential to the character.

She co-starred in Top Five (2014), earning a Critics’ Choice nomination, and reprised her role as Gail in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).

Beginning in 2015, Dawson played Claire Temple in Netflix’s Marvel series Daredevil, continuing the role in Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. Her likeness was also included in Marvel’s Jessica Jones tie-in comic.

From 2015 to 2017, she voiced characters in six animated films, including Wonder Woman in several DC animated features, Nyx in Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast, Elaris in Ratchet & Clank, and Batgirl in The Lego Batman Movie. She starred in the 2018 film Krystal.

In 2020, Dawson joined the Star Wars universe as Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian, later reprising the role in The Book of Boba Fett and in her own spinoff series, Ahsoka. She also wrote the foreword for the Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy (2024).

She returned as Becky in Clerks III (2022).

Dawson has been politically active. She was arrested in 2004 while protesting against President George W. Bush. She supported Barack Obama in 2012 and endorsed Bernie Sanders during both his 2016 and 2020 primary campaigns. In April 2016, she was arrested during the Democracy Spring demonstrations in Washington, DC. She supported then-partner Cory Booker’s 2020 presidential run as well.

A lifelong Star Trek fan, Dawson has described herself as a Trekkie and has mentioned her and her brothers’ shared love for the franchise.

In 2014, she adopted a 12-year-old daughter, Isabella. In December 2023, Dawson announced that Isabella was expecting her first child, making Dawson a soon-to-be grandmother.

Dawson dated U.S. Senator Cory Booker from late 2018 until early 2022.

In 2018, a social media post of hers was widely interpreted as coming out as queer, though she later clarified that she had not intended to make a personal statement and primarily meant to express support for the LGBTQ community.

In 2019, Dedrek Finley filed a lawsuit against Dawson and her family, alleging discrimination, harassment, and assault. By August 2020, 18 of the 20 allegations had been withdrawn. In May 2021, the remaining claims were dismissed after the plaintiff failed to provide required documentation, statements, and medical evidence.
