Ronan Bennett is an Irish novelist and screenwriter who was born on January 14, 1956. His most well-known work is as showrunner, writer, and executive producer of the crime drama television series Top Boy, which deals with drugs and gangs. Additional writing credits include the 2017 BBC historical drama miniseries Gunpowder, the 2009 Michael Mann crime biopic Public Enemies, and the 1997 crime movie Face. Since then, he has developed, written, and executive produced The Day of the Jackal, a thriller series that has been nominated for a Golden Globe and has been revived for a second season.
After relocating to Hackney, East London, Bennett—who was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland—lived with his spouse and two kids. Top youngster, a British crime drama television series that focuses on gang culture and drug dealing on an East London council estate that is primarily black, was devised and written by Bennett after he saw a twelve-year-old youngster dealing narcotics at his neighborhood Tesco supermarket in Hackney. Rapper Drake produced the show’s 2014 resuscitation as an original Netflix series after it had been canceled after two seasons on Channel 4.
