Ranjith, who was born in Thrissur, Kerala, India, attended St. Thomas College in Thrissur for his formal education before pursuing a B.Tech in civil engineering at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering in Kothamangalam. American Dreams and Nizhalkal were the first television shows that Ranjith wrote for. For American Dreams, he was the recipient of the Kerala State Award for Best Television Screenplay. He released Passenger in 2009.
Dreams n Beyond’s first production, Molly Aunty Rocks (2012), starring Revathy and Prithviraj, was a critical and commercial success. Punyalan Agarbattis (2013), a satire starring Jayasurya, Nyla Usha, Innocent, Rachana Narayanankutty, and Aju Varghese, was his next motion picture.
Ranjith’s Varsham, which starred Mammootty, Asha Sarath, and Mamta Mohandas, was released in November 2014. With his role in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful movie, Mammootty took home multiple awards. In November 2015, the biographical film Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam came out after this.
Reuniting with Jayasurya, Ranjith took a stab at horror-comedy with Pretham, which hit theaters in August of 2016. Raju Gari Gadhi 2 (2017), starring Nagarjuna Akkineni, was a partially Telugu remake of it.
His next film was the best-selling film Ramante Edanthottam, which focused on female empowerment. Punyalan Private Limited and Pretham2 were the titles of his subsequent Punyalan and Pretham sequels. After launching Punyalan Private Limited, he went on to launch Punyalan Cinemas, another significant commercial success.
The movie “Njan Marykutty,” which was directed by Ranjith in 2018, is credited with being the first mainstream production in India with a transgender lead character. Actor Jayasurya played the title role in Marykutty, a movie that went on to win two Kerala State Awards and garner a lot of attention at film festivals.
In 2019, the experimental thriller Kamala was made available.
Ranjith voiced his concerns in 2023 regarding the diminishing number of people visiting theaters and emphasized the significance of giving box office revenue precedence over other sources of income, especially OTT platforms.
