In 1990, Indian actress Rama made her debut in the Tamil cinema industry. She ceased appearing in films after getting married in 1991 and moved in with her husband Venkatesh and their two sons. She did, however, return to the screen in the 2010 film Aval Peyar Thamizharasi, playing a mother in addition to numerous supporting parts and TV shows.
Shanthi played volleyball for the Tamil Nadu team when she was chosen for the 1990 film En Uyir Thozhan by director Bharathiraja. “Rama” was later the name given to her, continuing the director’s practice of giving his heroines new names that start with the letter “R.” In hindsight, critics have praised the picture despite its dismal box office performance. She costarred as the lead heroine in the 1990 film Anthi Varum Neram with her sister Latha. Her appearances in Tamil films ceased as a result of the film’s failure.
Before receiving praise from critics for her portrayal of Karthi’s fierce, possessive mother in Pa. Ranjith’s Madras (2014), she briefly returned in 2010 to play a mother in Aval Peyar Thamizharasi. Since then, she has also appeared in the political drama Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (2015) and Kaththi (2014), in which she played Vijay’s mother, directed by A. R. Murugadoss. She also appeared in television series including Avalum Penn Thaane and Kanavarukaaga, which were shown on Sun TV, and Bharathiraja’s Appanum Athaalum, which was broadcast on Kalaignar TV.
