Prafulla Kar, a revered figure in Odia music, was a multifaceted talent known for his contributions as a musician, singer, lyricist, writer, and columnist. He was born on February 16, 1939, into a family with a rich musical heritage in Puri, Orissa Province.
Raised by his grandparents due to the early loss of his father, Prafulla Kar inherited a deep-rooted passion for music from his family. His uncle, Khetra Mohan Kar, was a tabla player, further enriching his exposure to the world of music. During his academic years, he was associated with AISF, the students’ wing of CPI, and later became a prominent member of IPTA, the cultural wing of CPI, showcasing his involvement in both student activism and cultural pursuits.
Prafulla Kar’s remarkable career spanned across various facets of music and arts. He made significant contributions as a music director, singer, and lyricist in Odia cinema, having lent his talents to around 70 Odia films, including both released and unreleased works. Additionally, he also contributed to four Bengali films, showcasing the versatility and breadth of his musical prowess.
