Peter Zinner
Biography:
Peter Zinner was a talented Austrian-American film editor whose work played an important role in shaping modern Hollywood cinema. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1919, he studied music and theatre before his family fled Nazi persecution and eventually settled in the United States. Before establishing himself in the film industry, he worked as a taxi driver and played piano in theatres showing silent films. He later entered Hollywood as an apprentice editor and steadily developed his technical skills.
Zinner became internationally recognized through his work on Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974). Working alongside other editors, he helped construct the films’ memorable dramatic sequences. His contribution to the baptism sequence in The Godfather was particularly significant: he suggested incorporating organ music to strengthen the contrast between the religious ceremony and the simultaneous killings.
His greatest competitive award success came with The Deer Hunter (1978), which earned him the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. He also edited An Officer and a Gentleman and several acclaimed television miniseries, including The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Zinner directed The Salamander (1981) and occasionally worked as a producer. He continued working late into his career, collaborating with his daughter, Katina Zinner, on Running with Arnold (2006). He died in 2007, leaving behind a distinguished legacy in film editing.
