Her father, Edmund Jamison “Ned” Kauffman, Jr., was a businessman, and her mother, Sue Anna (née Shofstall), was an Oklahoma news magazine editor. Wagner was a regular performer at the local playhouse in Youngstown. She presently serves on the board of trustees at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she earned her BFA.
