Pa. Vijay is a multifaceted artist in Tamil cinema, excelling as a lyricist, poet, writer, director, producer, and actor. His lyrical prowess earned him the prestigious National Film Award for Best Lyrics for the song Ovvoru Pookalume from Cheran’s Autograph (2004), solidifying his reputation in the industry.
Originally hailing from Jayankondam, Vijay spent his formative years in Coimbatore, where his father, Balakrishnan, worked as a Spinning Man at the National Raw Factory, and his mother, Saraswathi, served as a government school teacher. His early connection to the film industry came through K. Bhagyaraj, a family friend, with whom he collaborated on films and the magazine Bhagya.
Vijay made his debut as a lyricist in Gnanapazham (1996) and went on to write numerous popular Tamil songs, becoming a sought-after name in the industry. While he was initially set to debut as an actor with Thaai Kaaviyam, the project was shelved. He later made his acting debut with Gnabagangal (2009), a film for which he also penned the script.
Following this, he took on a lead role in Ilaignan (2011), a film scripted by M. Karunanidhi, where he portrayed a bonded laborer on a ship. Expanding his creative pursuits, Vijay made his directorial and production debut with the 2015 horror-thriller Strawberry, further establishing his versatility in the Tamil film industry.
