Actress Mita Vashisht was born in India on November 2, 1967. She is well-known for her roles she has portrayed in theater, film, and television.
The sci-fi television series Space City Sigma (1989–1991), Pachpan Khambe Laal Deewarein, Swabhimaan, Alaan (Kirdaar), Trishna in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, and Jethi Maa in Kaala Teeka are among her most well-known performances. She has worked with a diverse range of filmmakers and movie types.
She completed her post-graduate studies in literature at Punjab University in Chandigarh after graduating from the National School of Drama in Delhi in 1987.
Vashisht has served as a visiting faculty member at many Indian design, film, and theater colleges, including the NIFT (Delhi), FTII (Pune), NSD (Delhi), and NID (Ahmedabad), for a number of years (1990–2010).
She has also led theater workshops in Damascus and in the UK (London, Birmingham, Leicester). She uses theater approaches to instruct pupils in acting, film direction, and fashion design. Anup Singh, a filmmaker, is her husband.
Vashisht has portrayed the lead characters in successful high budget Bollywood productions as well as in middle-of-the-road films (most notably Govind Nihalani’s films) and avant-garde films (most notably those directed by Kumar Shahani and Mani Kaul).
She has also directed and performed in plays. She creates her scripts and conducts research. She has been touring India since 2004 with her solo performance, Lal Ded, which is based on the life of the medieval Kashmiri mystic of the same name in both Hindi and English.
In addition to creating a television serial, Vashisht is the author and producer of three short films. The film The Name of a River was a co-production between Bangladesh, NFDC (India), and BFI (London), of which she served as executive producer.
In order to foster artistic collaborations, research, and education, Vashisht founded Mandala in June 2001. The objective was to initiate a fresh artistic movement, elevate and distinguish performing arts within the community, and facilitate artistic partnerships.
But she had an unexpected turn to her first project under Mandala. She devoted four years of her full-time career to the cause of self-empowerment and rehabilitation of trafficking minors after leading a chance theater workshop with trafficked minors in a Mumbai
