Michael Peña was born on January 13, 1976, in Chicago, Illinois, to Nicolasa, a social worker, and Eleuterio Peña, a factory worker. His parents were originally farmers from Mexico—his father hailed from Villa Purificación, Jalisco, and his mother from Charcas, San Luis Potosí. Peña was raised in the North Lawndale neighborhood and attended Marist High School before graduating from Hubbard High School, where he competed as a state qualifier in wrestling and track.
Peña began appearing in independent films in 1996, but his major breakthrough came in 2004 with two Academy Award-winning films written by Paul Haggis: Million Dollar Baby, directed by Clint Eastwood, and Crash, directed by Haggis himself. His emotionally powerful performance in Crash drew significant critical attention. The following year, Peña joined the Golden Globe-winning TV series The Shield and went on to star in Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, a drama based on the events of September 11, 2001. He also appeared in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel, making him one of the few actors to appear in three consecutive films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
In 2006, Peña portrayed Sal Castro, a Mexican-American teacher who inspired students to fight for Chicano rights, in HBO’s Walkout. He co-starred with Mark Wahlberg in the action thriller Shooter (2007), playing rookie FBI agent Nick Memphis, and later appeared alongside Seth Rogen in the comedy Observe and Report (2009) as a mall security guard.
Peña gained further acclaim in 2012 when he co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in End of Watch, playing a Los Angeles police officer. That same year, he began work on César Chávez, in which he portrayed the renowned labor leader and activist who co-founded the United Farm Workers. His subsequent roles included appearances in Fury (2014) with Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, and Jon Bernthal, and as the comedic character Luis in Marvel’s Ant-Man (2015).
Also in 2015, Peña played astronaut Rick Martinez in Ridley Scott’s The Martian, a critically acclaimed sci-fi film set on Mars. He later starred in 12 Strong (2018) alongside Chris Hemsworth and appeared in Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time the same year, portraying the villainous entity known as “Red.” In 2020, he played the enigmatic Mr. Roarke in the horror adaptation Fantasy Island.
In late 2017, Peña joined the cast of Narcos for its fourth season, which evolved into a new series titled Narcos: Mexico. He starred as DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, earning praise for his portrayal of the real-life agent. Peña also lent his voice to various animated projects, including Ricky in the FX comedy Chozen, Tito in Turbo, and Marguerite in the American Dad! episode “Hot Water.”
Beyond acting, Peña pursued music and founded the Los Angeles rock band Nico Vega in 2005, named in honor of his mother, Nicolasa. Though he left the band in 2007 to focus on acting, he co-wrote the song “Beast,” which later reached No. 26 on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs Chart. In 2022, he appeared in the music video for Midlake’s track “Bethel Woods,” and reunited with Nico Vega in December 2023.
Peña has been a member of the Church of Scientology since 2000. He married screenwriter and actress Brie Shaffer in 2006, and the couple has one son, Roman, born in 2008.
