Mahershala Ali (pronounced mə-HUR-shə-lə), born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974, is a highly acclaimed American actor. He has earned numerous prestigious awards, including two Academy Awards, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and a Primetime Emmy. In 2019, Time magazine named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people, and The New York Times later ranked him among the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century.
After completing his MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Ali began acting on television, with early roles in Crossing Jordan and Threat Matrix. He gained recognition for his portrayal of Richard Tyler in The 4400, and made his film debut in David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). His popularity increased with appearances in The Hunger Games series and House of Cards, where he earned his first Emmy nomination.
Ali made history by winning two Oscars for Best Supporting Actor — first for his role as a drug dealer in Moonlight (2016), and then as pianist Don Shirley in Green Book (2018). This achievement made him the first Black actor to win twice in that category and the second Black actor to receive multiple acting Oscars. He also won an Emmy for producing We Are the Dream: The Kids of the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest in 2020.
On TV, he starred as detective Wayne Hays in season three of HBO’s True Detective and appeared in Ramy (2020), earning Emmy nominations for both. Other notable roles include Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes in Luke Cage and voicing Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel.
Born in Oakland, California, to Willicia Goines and Phillip Gilmore, Ali was raised in Hayward by his mother, a Baptist minister. His father, a Broadway dancer, left when Ali was young and passed away in 1994. He attended St. Mary’s College in California on a basketball scholarship, later developing a passion for acting. A role in a play led to an apprenticeship with the California Shakespeare Theater, followed by graduate studies in acting.
Professionally, Ali initially used his full first name, Mahershalalhashbaz, but shortened it to Mahershala in 2010 due to space constraints on film posters and personal preference. Despite working in Hollywood, he was never pressured to change his name.
His filmography includes key roles in Predators, The Place Beyond the Pines, Free State of Jones, and Hidden Figures. He received critical acclaim and numerous awards for his performance in Moonlight, becoming the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. He followed this with another Oscar-winning performance in Green Book.
Ali has also lent his talents to video games, playing Cutter Wade in Madden NFL 18’s story mode. His performance in True Detective received wide praise, with critics calling it “mesmerizing.”
He converted to Islam in 2000, adopting the surname Ali. He has spoken about experiencing racial profiling post-9/11. He is married to actress and musician Amatus Sami-Karim, and they have a daughter, born in 2017.
A passionate hip hop enthusiast, Ali has named artists like Cambatta, Planet Asia, Ka, Skyzoo, Blu, and Roc Marciano among his favorites. In 2023, he signed an open letter advocating for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, and in early 2024, he publicly supported Palestinian poet Mohammed al-Qudwa, helping raise funds for his family to leave Gaza.
