Kira Kelly is a cinematographer from the United States. Her most well-known roles were on the cable series Queen Sugar and 13th, for which she was nominated for an Emmy.
Kelly majored in radio, television, and film and graduated from Northwestern University. She started out as an electrician before pursuing a career in movies. Furthermore, she stated in a 2017 interview on the public radio show The Frame that she would “shoot any project I could get my hands on.”
Working as a gaffer on larger-scale projects taught her a lot as well. Her first cinematography projects included the Hulu series East Los High and two Tom Gustafson-directed films.
Her career took a significant turn when Ava DuVernay contacted her on social media. As a result, Kelly was subsequently hired to work on 13th, for which she was nominated for an Emmy.
