Kalvakuntla Kavitha, an Indian politician and current Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from Nizamabad since 2020, is affiliated with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi party. She had previously served as a Member of Parliament representing the Nizamabad Lok Sabha Constituency from 2014 to 2019. Kavitha is the daughter of K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana.
Early Life and Education: Kavitha was born in Karimnagar to Chandrashekhar Rao and Shobha. Her father played a pivotal role in the Telangana Movement and later became the first Chief Minister of Telangana. Her father hails from Chinthamadaka village in Siddipet District, Telangana.
She holds a B.Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering from VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology. Additionally, she completed her Master of Sciences from the University of Southern Mississippi. Before returning to India in 2004 with a mission to work for the people of Telangana, she worked as a software engineer in the USA.
Kavitha is married to Devanapalli Anil Kumar, a businessman, and they have two sons, Aaditya and Aarya.
Career: Following her marriage, Kavitha relocated to the United States with her husband in 2003. However, in 2006, she returned to India to support her father in various capacities. In 2014, Telangana was established as a separate state from Andhra Pradesh, with her father leading the statehood movement. During the May 2014 elections, her father’s party secured victory in both the state assembly and the national parliament, resulting in her father becoming the first Chief Minister of Telangana. Kavitha remained in India to assist him in various ways. She contested the Lok Sabha election in 2019 from Nizamabad but was defeated by BJP candidate Arvind Dharmapuri.
Early Public Life: In 2006, the Telangana movement gained momentum when K. Chandrashekhar Rao resigned from the Union Cabinet, expressing strong dissent with the Central Government’s backtrack on the promise of Telangana State formation.
This move served as an inspiration for millions of Telangana residents who left their careers to join the movement. Motivated by the dedication and sacrifices of the movement’s leader and its supporters, Kavitha immersed herself in the people’s movement.
To gain firsthand knowledge of the issues affecting the people, Kavitha embarked on extensive journeys across Telangana, visiting even the most remote villages. This experience brought about a significant shift in her understanding of society, particularly within Telangana. Witnessing the extent of poverty, the lack of essential necessities such as electricity, clean drinking water, and irrigation, along with widespread unemployment and the associated exploitation, deeply affected her.
