Jim Norman Beaver Jr. (born August 12, 1950) is an American actor, writer, and film historian, best recognized for his role as Bobby Singer in Supernatural. He also gained acclaim as Whitney Ellsworth in HBO’s Deadwood, earning a Screen Actors Guild nomination, and portrayed Sheriff Shelby Parlow in Justified and Robert “Dakota Bob” Singer in The Boys. His memoir, Life’s That Way, was published in April 2009.
Born in Laramie, Wyoming, to Dorothy Adell and James Norman Beaver, a minister, he has English, French, Cherokee, German, and Scottish ancestry. His family later settled in Texas, where he attended Irving High School before transferring to Fort Worth Christian Academy, graduating in 1968. He briefly attended Oklahoma Christian College and developed an interest in writing and film history.
After high school, Beaver enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving as a radio operator in Vietnam before returning to the U.S. in 1971. He later pursued theatre at Oklahoma Christian University, making his stage debut in The Miracle Worker, and later transferring to Central State University. During this time, he wrote plays and worked in various jobs, including cab driving and radio hosting.
His professional acting career began in 1972, performing in theatre productions before moving to New York City in 1979. He acted in various stage plays and began writing for film and television, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents. In 1983, he relocated to Los Angeles to research a biography on George Reeves. There, he joined Theatre West and transitioned into television writing and acting, with his career taking off after a role in In Country.
Beaver went on to appear in numerous films, including Sister Act, Sliver, Magnolia, Adaptation., and Crimson Peak. On television, he starred in Thunder Alley, Reasonable Doubts, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and had guest roles in Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Harper’s Island, and Big Love. His portrayal of Whitney Ellsworth in Deadwood and Sheriff Shelby Parlow in Justified solidified his reputation as a skilled character actor.
Since 2018, Beaver has played Robert “Dakota Bob” Singer in The Boys, a role linked to his character in Supernatural. He reprised his Supernatural role in The Winchesters in 2023. Over his career, he has received multiple accolades, including the Soaring Talent Award from the Tallgrass Film Festival in 2023.
In his personal life, Beaver was married to actress and casting director Cecily Adams, with whom he had a daughter, Madeline. Adams passed away from lung cancer in 2004. He later married actress and singer Sarah Spiegel in 2019, but they divorced in 2024.
