Chitra, born into a Bengali family as Chitra Shome, led a life marked by personal upheavals and musical success. After marrying Debo Prasad Dutta and having a daughter named Monica, she encountered Jagjit Singh, a struggling singer, while still married. Finding solace in their bond, she divorced her first husband, securing custody of Monica, and married Jagjit Singh.
Together, as a ghazal singing duo, Chitra and Jagjit Singh soared to great heights professionally. However, tragedy struck when their son, Vivek, passed away in a road accident in 1990. The loss deeply impacted Chitra, leading her to abstain from performing or recording music in public ever since.
Meanwhile, Monica, Chitra’s daughter from her first marriage, experienced her own trials. She married and had two sons but faced turmoil, divorcing her husband Jehangir Chowdhary in 2005. Subsequently, she married Mark Houghton Roger Atkins, a British national. However, their relationship turned tumultuous, resulting in a case of harassment against Atkins.
