Callan Mulvey
Biography:
Callan Mulvey (born February 23, 1975) is an Australian actor best known for his roles as Mark Moran in Underbelly, Sergeant Brendan “Josh” Joshua in Rush, and Bogdan Drazic in the hit teen series Heartbreak High. Internationally, he has appeared in major Hollywood films including 300: Rise of an Empire, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and the TV series Power, where he played Dean/Milan.
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Mulvey is of Scottish, Irish, and Māori heritage. He moved to Australia at age eight and was raised in Sydney’s northern beaches. His early passion for skateboarding and rollerblading led him into stunt work, which he did for two years before landing his breakout role as Drazic in Heartbreak High. His first screen appearance was in a police training video, playing a robbery victim.
In 2003, after finishing filming for Thunderstruck, Mulvey was involved in a severe car accident on December 31 that left him with life-threatening injuries and required months of rehabilitation. He returned to public attention in May 2004 for the release of the film.
Between 2006 and 2008, he had recurring guest roles on Home and Away (as Johnny Cooper) and also appeared in McLeod’s Daughters in 2007. His major breakthrough came with his portrayal of Mark Moran in Underbelly (2008), followed by his role as Sgt. Brendan Joshua in Rush.
In 2012, he portrayed Mark Anthony “Snoddy” Spencer in the miniseries Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms and appeared as Saber in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. The following year, he was featured in The Turning.
Mulvey’s 2014 roles included Syllias in 300: Rise of an Empire, Jack Rollins in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Skylar in Miss Meadows, and Jack Taylor in Kill Me Three Times. Two years later, he played Anatoli Knyazev (a version of KGBeast) in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and appeared in Warcraft as a warrior. That same year, he joined the cast of Power for its third season.
He went on to star in several films, including Beyond Skyline and Bleeding Steel (both 2017), followed by Delirium, Outlaw King, In Like Flynn, and Desolate (all 2018).
Mulvey’s 2003 car accident left lasting injuries: his face was severely damaged and reconstructed with 17 titanium plates after surgeons made an incision from ear to ear to repair multiple fractures. He also suffered major leg injuries and permanently lost vision in his left eye.
In 2010, Mulvey married Rachel Thomas, an academic and musician, in Byron Bay, Australia.
