Biography:
Bornila Chatterjee is an Indian-American filmmaker, writer, and director who works in the independent films as well as digital entertainment industry. Bornila started her career making movies on personal and intimate themes that deal with relationships, identities, and contemporary realities of life.
Her first feature film was Let’s Be Out, the Sun Is Shining (2012). Her most notable work is The Hungry (2017), which is a dark and dramatic film based on William Shakespeare’s play Titus Andronicus. Naseeruddin Shah, Tisca Chopra, Neeraj Kabi, and Suraj Sharma star in The Hungry which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and later had its screening at various international film festivals. It received acclaim for its atmospheric photography and unusual narrative style.
Chatterjee is known to make movies not only in independent cinema but also in the digital platform. She collaborated with creator Alankrita Shrivastava in writing and directing of the Netflix drama Bombay Begums (2021). Also, she was one of the writers of the Amazon Prime show Mumbai Diaries. Her movies explore complex and tense relationships, social hierarchies, genders, and psyche.
