Sundar C. has an assistant in Bhoopathy Pandian. In addition to helping him, he penned the dialogue for his movies Giri and Winner. Soon after Thulluvadho Ilamai’s popularity, Dhanush signed on to star in the movie, then called Ennai Mattum Kadhal Pannu; Sherin costarred with him in that picture.
Since then, the heroine and the title have had a few changes. First, she was called Kadhal Sughamanathu, and later on, she was called Devathayai Kanden, after the hit song from the Dhanush-starring film Kadhal Kondein. Sherin was replaced as the movie’s heroine by Sridevi Vijayakumar.
After working together on Devathayai Kanden (2005), Boopathy Pandian and Dhanush announced the project towards the end of August 2005. The movie was originally titled Naveena Thiruvilayadal, but the prefix was eventually removed.
Shriya Saran, who became well-known in Tamil cinema after her performance in Mazhai, was cast as the lead. In September 2010, Vimala Geetha, the film’s producer, received a legal notice from the actor Sivaji Ganesan’s Fan Club requesting that the movie’s name be changed to Thiruvilayadal within 15 days or else legal action would be taken before the appropriate forum.
They believed the new project would discredit the 1965 Sivaji movie of the same name, which they felt was referenced in the title. Originally scheduled to play Dhanush’s father, Mouli took K. Bhagyaraj’s role after the film’s release was delayed.
Due to her commitment to work on Rajinikanth’s Sivaji, Shriya Saran was forced to withdraw from the project in October 2005. Rumors circulated that the film had been cancelled, and reports speculated that Tamannaah or Ileana might be asked to take her place.
Boopathy Pandian, however, reaffirmed in January 2006 that the movie would go forward and the unfinished parts would be finished quickly. But as soon as she was able to schedule dates, Shriya went back to work on the movie.
When the movie debuted in December 2006, critics gave it favorable reviews. Rediff.com reported that “Director Boopathy Pandian has a tight hold on pacing, ensuring that the interest never flags” . “Bhoopathy Pandian has a good grasp of what makes an entertainer click with the masses,” said another Indiaglitz observer. His straightforward approach to a simple issue gets things done.” At the time, the film was Dhanush’s highest grosser in Tamil Nadu, earning ₹100 million (US$1.3 million).
