Bharath Gopi, better known by his stage name Bharat Gopy, was an Indian actor, producer, and director who lived from 2 November 1937 to 29 January 2008. Gopy, who is regarded as one of the best actors in Indian cinema history, was among the first performers to be connected to the New Wave cinema movement in Kerala in the 1970s.
The name Bharath was given to Bharat Gopy as a result of his numerous accolades, which include the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance as Sankarankutty in Kodiyettam (1977).
Aiyappan in Yavanika, Vasu Menon in Palangal, Prof. “Shakespeare” Krishna Pillai in Kattathe Kilikoodu, Dushasana Kurup in Panchavadi Palam, Nandagopal in Ormakkayi, Mammachan in Adaminte Vaariyellu, Shankaran in Chidambaram, and Krishnan Raju in Aghaat are just a few of his well-known roles. For a variety of roles, he received four Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor.
He gained notoriety as a director with Ulsavapittennu (1989) and Yamanam (1991). He was a producer of Bharathan’s 1993 film Padheyam. He was given the Padma Shri award by the Indian government in 1991 in recognition of his services to the arts. He wrote Abhinayam Anubhavam in 1994, which took home the National Film Award for Best Book on Cinema.
Bharat Gopy, the youngest of Kochuveetil Velayudhan Pillai and Parvathyamma’s four children, was born on November 2, 1937, in Chirayinkeezhu, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala. He graduated from University College in Thiruvananthapuram with a BSc in science. He began working for the Kerala Electricity Board as a Lower Division Clerk as soon as he finished his education.
Jayalakshmy S. V. is his wife. Murali Gopy, a writer and actor, is the couple’s son, and Dr. Minu Gopy is their daughter.
