Ashleigh Cummings, born on November 11, 1992, is an Australian actress known for her versatile roles across film and television. She first rose to prominence as Robyn Mathers in Tomorrow, When the War Began, a film adaptation of the popular novel. Her performance earned her a nomination for Best Young Actor at the 2010 Australian Film Institute Awards. Cummings has also gained recognition for her roles as Dorothy Williams in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Debbie Vickers in Puberty Blues, Vic McQueen in AMC’s NOS4A2, Abby Conroy in Amazon Prime’s Citadel, and Kacey Fitzpatrick in Peacock’s Long Bright River.
Cummings was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where her Australian parents were working at the time. At 12, she moved with her family to Australia. She began ballet training at the age of two and, by 14, was attending Brent Street School of Performing Arts to study dance and acting. She later graduated from Wenona School in North Sydney in 2010 and also studied at Screenwise, a film and television school. Between acting roles, she pursued philosophy at university.
Her acting debut included a dance role in Razzle Dazzle: A Journey into Dance (2007) and a lead in Green Fire Envy, produced by Participate Film Academy. She followed up with appearances in Dream Life and a guest role in Home and Away.
In 2009, she joined the cast of Tomorrow, When the War Began, undergoing training in dirt bike riding and firearm handling for the role. She adjusted her schooling to accommodate filming and received award recognition for her performance.
By late 2010, Cummings performed in Our Town with the Sydney Theatre Company and made appearances in Rescue Special Ops, Underbelly: Razor, and Dance Academy. She gained further acclaim as Dot Williams in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, portraying a modest, devout assistant to Phryne Fisher.
In 2012, she took on the role of Debbie Vickers in Puberty Blues, a series adaptation of the novel that challenged her perceptions with its bold themes. She prepared for the role by taking surfing lessons. Between projects, she volunteered in Southeast Asia, later returning for Miss Fisher’s second season. Her work in both series earned her a Logie Award nomination for Most Popular Actress.
Cummings lent her voice to Dan Webb’s album Sandstorm (2014) and starred in the indie film Galore as Billie, earning a Film Critics Circle of Australia nomination. In 2015, she appeared in Gallipoli as Celia and in the remake of Goodbye Pork Pie. The following year, she was awarded the Heath Ledger Scholarship by Australians in Film, enabling her to study at prestigious acting studios in Los Angeles.
She later played lead roles in Hounds of Love and Westside, a prequel to Outrageous Fortune, where she portrayed Cheryl Miller. Cummings starred as Pippa in The Goldfinch, based on Donna Tartt’s novel, and took on the lead as Vic McQueen in NOS4A2, an AMC horror series. In 2023, she began portraying Abby Conroy in Amazon Prime’s espionage thriller Citadel.
