Savitri, originally named Nissankara, was a prominent Indian actress, singer, and filmmaker renowned for her contributions primarily in Telugu and Tamil cinema. She achieved fame as one of the highest-paid and most beloved actresses in India during the 1950s and ’60s, earning the epithets “Mahanati” in Telugu and “Nadigaiyar Thilagam” in Tamil.

Over her illustrious three-decade career, Savitri appeared in more than 250 films. Her breakthrough role came in the 1952 film “Pelli Chesi Choodu.” Subsequently, she starred in acclaimed movies such as “Devadasu” (1953), “Mayabazar” (1957), “Nartanasala” (1963), and “Missamma” (1955), among others. Savitri was not only celebrated for her acting prowess but also admired for her philanthropy and compassion towards the less fortunate. She received numerous accolades, including the “A Moon Among Stars” honor at the 30th International Film Festival of India.

Born on December 6, 1935, in Chirravuru, Andhra Pradesh, Savitri displayed a knack for dance from an early age. Her journey into the film industry began when she met Ramaswamy Ganesan, also known as Gemini Ganesan, who played a pivotal role in launching her career. Despite facing personal challenges, including a tumultuous marriage to Gemini Ganesan, Savitri’s dedication to her craft remained unwavering.

Savitri’s legacy extends beyond her acting career; she ventured into filmmaking and even received recognition for her directorial efforts. Despite facing financial difficulties in her later years, Savitri continued to captivate audiences with her performances in films like “Gorintaku” (1979) and “Devadasu Malli Puttadu” (1978).

In both Telugu and Tamil cinema, Savitri collaborated with industry giants like M.G.R., Sivaji Ganesan, and her husband, Gemini Ganesan. Her notable Tamil films include “Kalathur Kannamma” (1959), “Pasamalar” (1961), “Karnan” (1963), and “Thiruvilaiyadal” (1965).
