Rajiv Chilaka

Producer
Birth Place : Hyderabad, Telangana, India

Biography:

Rajiv Chilakalapudi, also known as Rajiv Chilaka and Sitarama Rajiv Chilakalapudi, is the founder and CEO of Hyderabad-based Green Gold Animations. He is the creator of several animated series, including the Krishna cartoon series and Chhota Bheem, which has been adapted into both an animated series and multiple films. In recognition of his contributions to animation at an affordable price, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, in 2016. Additionally, he received the 2013 School of Computing and Engineering Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

Rajiv Chilaka attended Hyderabad Public School and earned his BE in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad, in 1995. He later pursued a master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. After working as a software engineer in Kansas City for three years, he shifted his focus to animation in 2000 and studied at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. His elder brother, Srinivas Chilaka, assists him in managing Green Gold Animations. He is the youngest son of noted technocrat Madhusudan Rao Chilaka.

Businessworld magazine recognized Green Gold Animations and Gamitronics as two of India’s top ten visual content companies in 2023. In January 2001, Rajiv Chilaka founded Green Gold Animation Pvt Ltd, which, according to The Hindu, has grown to become perhaps the largest animation production company in India that caters primarily to children.

His breakthrough came in 2004 with Bongo, an animated series about an alien landing on Earth. This was followed by Vikram Betal, an 80-minute 2D animation film on Cartoon Network in 2005. He and his team created four animated telefilms based on Krishna’s life before launching Chhota Bheem on Pogo TV in 2008. Initially, Pogo faced financial struggles and considered dropping the show, but its immense success led to continued production.

Rajiv Chilaka originally conceived Chhota Bheem in 2005, drawing inspiration from the Mahabharata’s Bhima. During its first three years, the show subtly hinted at Bheem being a reincarnation of the legendary warrior prince. However, the setting of Dholakpur and its characters evolved into a more contemporary world, incorporating elements like Bollywood, trains, and airplanes. The first episode aired on April 6, 2008, and by 2012, over 130 episodes had been broadcast in multiple languages, along with more than 10 television movies on Pogo. In 2012, Chhota Bheem was ranked the most popular television character among children by Ormax Media’s Small Wonders.

That same year, the franchise expanded into feature films, beginning with Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan, written by Richa Ingle Deo and Seeta, which grossed 50 million rupees at the box office. In 2016, Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure, written by Teja Pratap and Rajiv Chilaka, was released. On May 10, 2019, Chhota Bheem: Kung Fu Dhamaka premiered, featuring music by Sunidhi Chauhan and distributed by Yash Raj Films. This was the first Chhota Bheem film to be released in both 2D and 3D formats. Rajiv Chilaka directed and produced these films, further cementing his influence in Indian animation.
