Nelson Dilip Kumar

Biography:

Nelson holds a degree in visual communication from New College, Chennai. He began his career as an assistant script-writer at Star Vijay. His first attempt at directing was a film called “Vettai Mannan” in 2010, starring Silambarasan, Jai, Hansika Motwani, and Deeksha Seth. However, the project was halted during production for unknown reasons. There was an unsuccessful effort to revive it in 2017 with a new crew, including composer Anirudh Ravichander.

Nelson’s actual directorial debut came with the dark comedy “Kolamaavu Kokila,” featuring Nayanthara in the lead role. The film, produced by Lyca Productions, was released on 17 August 2018 and achieved commercial success. His subsequent film, “Doctor,” starring Sivakarthikeyan and Priyanka Arul Mohan, also became a major blockbuster among Tamil-language films released after pandemic-induced lockdowns.

In November 2020, Anirudh introduced Nelson to actor Vijay, who was impressed with Nelson’s script for “Beast.” This action-comedy thriller, which marked Vijay’s 65th film and also starred Pooja Hegde, had a pan-Indian release in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam languages on 13 April 2022. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, “Beast” performed exceptionally well at the box office, grossing ₹240 crore worldwide.

Nelson’s upcoming project is the 169th film of superstar Rajinikanth, tentatively titled “Thalaivar 169.” Later revealed as “Jailer,” the film features Rajinikanth in the role of an experienced jailer. It is scheduled for release on 10 August 2023.
