Shabbir Kumar, born on 26 October 1954, is a renowned Indian playback singer celebrated for his remarkable contributions to Bollywood. Shabbir Kumar embarked on his musical journey in Baroda, initially making a name for himself with the Melody Makers orchestra in Pune and Mumbai. His passion for Mohammed Rafi’s music led him to play a pivotal role in promoting the “Ek Shaam Rafi Ke Naam” show, a tribute to the legendary singer. Shabbir Kumar’s connection with Rafi’s legacy deepened when, during Rafi’s funeral in 1980, Shabbir’s wristwatch fell into Rafi’s open grave, an incident he interpreted as a divine message, marking him as Rafi’s successor.
The turning point in Shabbir Kumar’s career came when music director Usha Khanna provided him with a break in the film “Tajurba” (1981). His association with director Manmohan Desai caught the attention of music director duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal (L-P), who recommended him to sing in the film “Coolie” (1983). This marked the beginning of Shabbir Kumar’s collaboration with L-P, and he soon gained recognition for his duet with Lata Mangeshkar in “Shaam Hai Ye Kuch Khoyi Khoyi” from “Prem Tapasya” (1983).
Shabbir Kumar’s career flourished in the 1980s, with notable songs in films like “Betaab,” where he sang all five songs for Sunny Deol, and “Coolie,” where he lent his voice to all seven songs, including six for Amitabh Bachchan. In the 2000s, Shabbir Kumar continued to contribute to the music industry with songs in films like “Ghaath” (2000), “Awara Paagal Deewana” (2002), and “Aan: Men at Work” (2004). Notable hits include “Gori Hai Kalaiyan” from “Aaj Ka Arjun” (1990) and “Sochna Kya” from “Ghayal” (1990).
