Riya Sen, born Riya Dev Varma on January 24, 1981, is an Indian actress and model known for her work in Hindi, Bengali, English, Telugu, and Tamil films.
Her lineage boasts a royal background, being the daughter of Bharat Dev Varma from the royal family of Tripura. Her father was the son of Ila Devi, a princess of Cooch Behar, and the nephew of Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur. Riya’s mother, Moon Moon Sen, and grandmother, Suchitra Sen, were esteemed veteran actresses in the industry.
Riya began her acting career at the age of five, debuting as her mother’s on-screen daughter. Her initial foray into films included a role as a child actress in the movie “Vishkanya” in 1991, portraying a young Pooja Bedi.
She garnered early recognition in the music video “Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi” by Falguni Pathak at seventeen in 1998, marking her debut as a model. This led to numerous appearances in music videos, television ads, fashion shows, and magazine covers.
In her acting career, she found success with films like “Style” (2001), a low-budget Hindi comedy directed by N. Chandra, which became a commercial hit. Her notable works include “Jhankaar Beats” (2003), produced by Pritish Nandy, and the Malayalam horror film “Ananthabhadram” (2005), for which she won the Star Guide Award for Best Actress for her role in “Noukadubi.”
