Ridley Scott

Biography:

Ridley Scott is an English film director and producer famous for his unique visual style and remarkable contributions to the science fiction, historical drama, crime, and action movies. He was born on November 30, 1937, in South Shields, England, where he obtained education in graphic design at the Royal College of Art. Ridley Scott worked in television and advertising. He founded Ridley Scott Associates in 1968, made numerous commercials, and started his career in feature films with The Duellists in 1977. Ridley Scott made an international success with Alien in 1979 – a landmark of science-fiction horror, and with Blade Runner in 1982, considered to be a highly influential science-fiction film. Scott directed such movies as Legend in 1985, Black Rain in 1989, and Thelma & Louise in 1991 and demonstrated his ability to switch between genres while keeping his highly controlled visual style.

The success of his career can be attributed to such movies as Gladiator in 2000, an epic historical drama with Russell Crowe that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and got Ridley Scott nominated for Best Director. His next notable works included Black Hawk Down in 2001, Kingdom of Heaven in 2005, American Gangster in 2007, Robin Hood in 2010, Prometheus in 2012, The Martian in 2015, All the Money in the World in 2017, The Last Duel in 2021, House of Gucci in 2021, and Napoleon in 2023. Ridley Scott went back to the universe of Gladiator with Gladiator II in 2024. He was nominated for several Academy Awards and BAFTAs and received many other awards in his career. The production design, atmosphere in cinematography, large scale of sets, and world-building of Ridley Scott’s films are particularly appreciated, and that is why he is considered one of the most influential British filmmakers today.
