Raja Babu

Raja Babu, born Punyamurthula Appalaraju on October 20, 1937, and affectionately known by his stage name, was a revered figure in Indian cinema, particularly celebrated for his comedic genius within the Telugu film industry. Hailing from Rajamundry, Andhra Pradesh, Raja Babu was born to Punyamurthula Umamaheswara Rao and Ramanamma, under the given name of Appala Raju. Notably, he emerged from a family with a comedic lineage, with his brothers Chitti Babu and Ananth Babu also making their mark in the realm of comedy.

Raja Babu’s journey into the world of entertainment was marked by humble beginnings and a passion for acting nurtured from his early days. After completing his Intermediate education, he pursued a career in teaching Telugu. However, his penchant for performance led him to participate in various theatrical productions, including popular dramas like “Kukka Pilla Dorikindi” and “Alluri Sitarama Raju.”

Garikapati Raja Rao recognized Raja Babu’s talent and invited him to pursue opportunities in Madras (now Chennai). In 1960, director Addala Narayana Rao provided him with his first break in the film “Samajam,” thus initiating his illustrious career in cinema. Raja Babu’s forte lay in slapstick comedy, and he quickly became renowned for his impeccable timing and effortless humor, ultimately starring in a remarkable 589 films over a span of less than two decades.

Despite predominantly portraying comedic roles, Raja Babu showcased his versatility by essaying lead roles in films like “Tata Manavadu,” “Pichodi Pelli,” and “Thirupathi.” His on-screen chemistry with actresses like Ramaprabha, Leela Rani, and Gitanjali, particularly in tandem with the iconic comedy duo he formed with Ramaprabha, remains legendary.

Beyond his professional achievements, Raja Babu found personal fulfillment in his marriage to Lakshmi Ammalu in 1965. The couple was blessed with two children, Nagendra Babu and Mahesh Babu, both of whom have carved successful careers in the entertainment industry. Raja Babu’s legacy endures not only through his cinematic contributions but also through the enduring impact he left on generations of audiences with his unparalleled comedic brilliance.
