Prosit Roy

Biography:

Prosit Roy is an Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter known for his work in both films and web series. He made his directorial debut with the supernatural horror film Pari (2018), starring Anushka Sharma, under her production company Clean Slate Filmz. He later co-directed the Amazon Prime Video crime thriller series Paatal Lok (2020), which won widespread critical acclaim and multiple awards.

Born and raised in Kolkata, Roy comes from a culturally rich Bengali family. His grandfather, Pronab Roy, was a writer and lyricist, his father is a music professional, and his mother is a dance performer who has worked with Uday Shankar. He completed his schooling at Nava Nalanda High School in South Kolkata and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from South City College, graduating from the University of Calcutta.

Roy’s passion for storytelling led him to explore filmmaking in Kolkata before moving to Mumbai to gain professional experience on film sets. He worked with several acclaimed directors, including Vishal Bhardwaj, Ashutosh Gowariker, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, and Abbas Tyrewala. His Bollywood journey began in 2008 as an assistant director on the film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na.

In 2015, Roy directed the short film Bloody Mustache, which was made on a small budget but received critical acclaim at various domestic and international film festivals, including the New York Indian Film Festival. He then directed Pari in 2018, which was praised for its unique approach to horror and became a trendsetter in Bollywood’s horror genre.

Roy gained further recognition as the co-director of Paatal Lok, which was created by Sudip Sharma and produced by Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Filmz. Released on May 15, 2020, the series was widely regarded as one of the best Indian web series and won the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Series. Roy himself won the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Director in 2021.

For his work on Pari, he was nominated in 2019 for the Most Promising Debut Director and Best Debut Director at the Star Screen Awards, Filmfare Awards, and Zee Cine Awards. With his growing impact in the industry, Prosit Roy continues to bring compelling and genre-defining stories to Indian cinema and digital platforms.
