Pamela Chopra (née Singh; 19 February 1948 – 20 April 2023) was an accomplished Indian playback singer, film writer, and producer, widely recognized for her contributions to the Bollywood film industry. Born in Amritsar, Punjab, India, she was the daughter of Mohinder Singh, an officer in the Indian Army. Growing up amidst her father’s postings to various remote locations, Chopra received her education in several army schools. She was the eldest of three siblings, with two younger brothers, and a cousin to the actress Simi Garewal.
Pamela Chopra’s versatile career in the film industry included her roles as a playback singer and a contributor to film production and writing. She lent her melodious voice to several film songs, notable among them being tracks in films like “Kabhi Kabhie” (1976) and “Mujhse Dosti Karoge!” (2002). In addition to her singing, Pamela also appeared in the credits as a producer for certain films directed by her husband, veteran Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra.
As a part of her creative involvement, Pamela co-wrote the script for her husband’s film “Dil To Pagal Hai” (1997) along with Yash Chopra, her son Aditya Chopra, and professional writer Tanuja Chandra. Although primarily behind the scenes, she made a rare on-screen appearance in the opening song “Ek Duje Ke Vaaste” of the same film, sharing the screen with her husband.
In her personal life, Pamela Chopra entered into a traditional arranged marriage with Yash Chopra in 1970, a union facilitated by a common family friend. The couple had a loving and enduring marriage, blessed with two sons, Aditya and Uday. Aditya followed in his father’s footsteps and became a film producer and director, while Uday pursued a career as an actor and film producer. Pamela’s warmth and affection towards her family were evident in their successful and harmonious relationships.
Pamela Chopra’s legacy was marked by her multifaceted contributions to the Indian film industry, and her passing on 20 April 2023, at the age of 75, left a void in the hearts of those who admired her work. She succumbed to pneumonia at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai after being admitted for age-related issues, leaving behind a rich tapestry of artistic endeavors and cherished memories.
