Michael Douglas
Biography:
Michael Douglas was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, as the first child of actors Kirk Douglas and Diana Dill, who met at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. His father, born Issur Danielovitch, was Jewish and of Belarusian descent, while his mother, from Devonshire Parish, Bermuda, had English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, French, Belgian, and Dutch ancestry. Through his mother, Douglas is connected to several notable Bermudian figures, including his uncle Sir Nicholas Bayard Dill and his grandfather Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Melville Dill, who served as Attorney General of Bermuda. Douglas holds both U.S. citizenship and Bermudian status.
He has one younger brother, Joel Douglas, and two half-brothers, Peter and Eric Douglas, from his father’s marriage to Anne Buydens. Douglas attended The Allen-Stevenson School in New York, Eaglebrook School in Massachusetts, and The Choate School in Connecticut before earning a B.A. in Dramatic Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1968. He later studied acting with Wynn Handman at The American Place Theatre in New York City.
Douglas began his acting career in the late 1960s, appearing in films such as Hail, Hero! and Summertree, the former earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Male Newcomer. His first major television role came in The Streets of San Francisco (1972–1976), where he starred opposite Karl Malden, whom he regarded as a mentor. In 1975, Douglas produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
During the late 1970s, Douglas balanced producing and acting, starring in Coma and The China Syndrome (1979). His breakthrough as a leading man came with Romancing the Stone (1984), followed by The Jewel of the Nile and Fatal Attraction (1987). That same year, he portrayed Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street, a role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Throughout the 1990s, Douglas starred in several acclaimed films, including Basic Instinct, Falling Down, The American President, The Game, and A Perfect Murder. He founded several production companies, including Bigstick Productions, Stonebridge Entertainment, Douglas/Reuther Productions, and Further Films.
In 2000, Douglas starred in Traffic and Wonder Boys, both of which received critical acclaim, and earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for Traffic. He later appeared in It Runs in the Family (2003) with his parents and son, and received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2004 Golden Globes.
Douglas continued his successful career with roles in The Sentinel (2006), King of California (2007), and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010). His portrayal of Liberace in Behind the Candelabra (2013) earned him Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards.
He entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hank Pym in Ant-Man (2015) and its sequels. Douglas also starred in the Netflix series The Kominsky Method, winning a Golden Globe for his performance. In 2023, he was honored with the Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes and the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award in India.
In 2024, he portrayed Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV+’s Franklin. By 2025, Douglas announced his semi-retirement from acting, expressing contentment with his career and stating he would only return for exceptional projects.
Over his extensive career, Douglas has received two Academy Awards, five Golden Globes, a BAFTA, a Primetime Emmy, and two SAG Awards. His lifetime honors include the AFI Life Achievement Award, two Honorary César Awards, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
