Indian actress Komal Mahuvakar, better known by her stage name Rupini, made appearances in films in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the languages of Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi.
Mahuvakar was raised in an educated home and was born in Bombay. Her mother worked as a nutritionist, and her father practiced law. When she was four years old, Lachhu Maharaj in Mumbai began teaching her how to dance. In a short amount of time, she learned every kind of classical dance, including Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, and Bharatanatyam.
Filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee offered her kid roles in his films, Mili (1975), Kotwal Saab (1977), and Khubsoorat (1980), when he unintentionally discovered her. She previously appeared in a few Hindi films as Komal Mahuvakar, a character actor. She began playing lead roles in films such as Awara Baap (1985), Ghungroo (1983), Payal Ki Jhankaar (1980), and Meri Adalat (1984). After accepting playing roles in South Indian films such as Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), Madurai Veeran Enga Saami (1990), En Thangachi Padichava (1988), Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), and Cooliekkaran (1987), she changed her name to Rupini.
Even though she alternated between Kollywood and Bollywood films, she favoured using both names. Following her marriage to Mohan Kumar in 1995, she gave up acting. Rupini gave up acting soon after being married in order to focus on her Chembur-based family. She established Universal Heart Hospital, a heart hospital for sick patients, in Chembur. She returned in the Tamil television serial Chithi 2 in 2020.
