English actor James Edward Carter OBE (born August 19, 1948) is best known for his portrayal of Mr. Carson in the ITV historical drama series Downton Abbey (2010–2015), for which he received four nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (2012–2015). He returned to the role in the feature films Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022), and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025).
England’s Harrogate is where Carter was born. His father was employed by the Air Ministry, while his mother was a land girl before becoming a school secretary. Carter studied law at Ashville College in Harrogate, where he was head boy in his last year, and at the University of Sussex, where he performed in the first student production at the newly constructed Gardner Arts Centre theatre, Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance.
