Gayatri Jayaraman is an Indian actress primarily known for her work in Tamil language films. Her early life saw her education at Adarsh Vidyalaya and the Church Park in Chennai. Although initially aspiring to pursue a medical career, she shifted her focus to a B.Sc. in life science at IGNOU and later studied physiotherapy at SRM College in Chennai. Her decision to balance modeling and education stemmed from the recognition that the average lifespan of an actress on screen is limited, and she wanted to have a backup career option in physiotherapy.
Gayatri gained recognition through modeling assignments for prominent silk brands and beauty pageants, winning titles like Miss Tamil Nadu and Miss South India. She also ventured into television as a video jockey on shows like Fanta’s “Ilamai Pudhumai” and “Telephone Manipol.” Gayatri entered the acting world with K. Balachander’s tele-serial “Azhukku Veshti” and eventually made her film debut in the Kannada film “Neela,” earning acclaim for her mature performance. She ventured into Tamil and Telugu cinema with mixed success, appearing in films like “Manadhai Thirudivittai” and “Aaduthu Paaduthu.”
After her marriage to Indian entrepreneur and author Samit Sawhny in May 2007, Gayatri retired from the film industry. She transitioned into a certified scuba diving instructor in the Andaman Islands and briefly returned to television hosting roles, including the Chennai Super Kings Cheer Leaders talent show and the show “Super Kudumbam” on Sun TV in 2013.
