Deepa Mehta

Biography:

Deepa Mehta is a renowned filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer who works independently, in international cinema, and on television. Born and raised in India, Mehta completed a degree in philosophy from the University of Delhi and later relocated to Canada where she started her film-making career as a documentary filmmaker. Her debut in feature films came when she released Sam & Me (1991) that received a Special Jury Mention at the Cannes Film Festival. Mehta went ahead to make Camilla (1994) and mark her place in international cinema through her groundbreaking series called the Elements Trilogy (Fire, 1996; Earth, 1998; and Water, 2005). The trilogy dealt with topics such as women’s autonomy, Partition of India, social inequalities, and the lives of widows among other issues and became her defining film series.

Mehta continues to produce films in different genres such as Bollywood/Hollywood (2002); Heaven on Earth (2008); Midnight’s Children (2012); Beeba Boys (2015); and Funny Boy (2020). In addition, she has directed for television such as in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles as well as being active in production and screenwriting. Her film Water – the last installment of the Elements Trilogy – received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and added more weight to her international status. Through her films, Mehta has explored social issues in visually stunning and emotional stories, mostly about gender, identity, cultural conflicts, displacement, and social inequalities.
