David Duchovny was born in New York City in 1960 to Amram “Ami” Ducovny, a writer and publicist for the American Jewish Committee, and Margaret “Meg” Miller, a school administrator and teacher. He is the middle child of three, with an older brother, Daniel (b. 1956), and a younger sister, Laurie (b. 1966). His mother immigrated from Whitehills, Aberdeen, Scotland, while his father was Jewish, the son of immigrants from Berdychiv (in present-day Ukraine) and Congress Poland. The family surname, originally “Ducovny,” was modified when Duchovny’s father dropped the “h” to avoid mispronunciations while serving in the Army. In both Polish and Ukrainian, the name means “spiritual” or “clergyman.”
Duchovny was raised in Manhattan’s Ukrainian Village and attended The Collegiate School for Boys on the Upper West Side, where he graduated as head boy in 1978. He went on to Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1982 with a degree in English literature. At Princeton, he was part of Charter Club, played JV basketball, and earned an honorable mention from the Academy of American Poets for his poetry. His senior thesis was titled The Schizophrenic Critique of Pure Reason in Beckett’s Early Novels. He later pursued graduate studies at Yale, earning a master’s in English literature and beginning (but not completing) a Ph.D. with a dissertation on Magic and Technology in Contemporary Fiction and Poetry.
His early acting career included commercials, such as a 1987 spot for Löwenbräu beer, and small roles in films like Working Girl (1988), Chaplin (1992), and Beethoven (1992). On television, he gained attention as the transgender DEA agent Denise Bryson in Twin Peaks and as the host of Showtime’s Red Shoe Diaries.
In 1993, Duchovny landed the role that defined his career: FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder in The X-Files. The series became one of Fox’s first major hits, with Duchovny praised for both his intelligence and creative input into the character. He starred in the show until 2001, appearing sporadically until its conclusion in 2002, and reprised the role in The X-Files feature film (1998), as well as later revivals in 2016 and 2018. He also provided Mulder’s voice in a parody appearance on The Simpsons.
During and after The X-Files, Duchovny worked across film and television. He appeared in Kalifornia (1993), Playing God (1997), Return to Me (2000), Evolution (2001), and Zoolander (2001). He also hosted Saturday Night Live twice, guest-starred on The Larry Sanders Show, and directed his first feature, House of D (2005), though it was poorly received. From 2007 to 2014, he starred as troubled novelist Hank Moody in Showtime’s Californication, a role that earned him a Golden Globe. He later led the NBC crime drama Aquarius (2015) as a detective investigating Charles Manson.
Beyond acting, Duchovny has voiced characters in video games (XIII, Area 51), written and directed for television (Bones), and pursued creative projects as both a musician and author. He released his debut album Hell or Highwater in 2015, followed by Every Third Thought and Gestureland. As a novelist, he has published Holy Cow (2015), Bucky Fcking Dent* (2016), Miss Subways (2018), Truly Like Lightning (2021), and the novella The Reservoir (2021). In 2022, he adapted his own novel into the film Reverse the Curse, which he also directed and starred in.
In his personal life, Duchovny married actress Téa Leoni in 1997, with whom he shares two children: daughter West (b. 1999) and son Kyd (b. 2002). The couple separated in 2008, during which Duchovny sought treatment for sex addiction. Though they briefly reconciled, they divorced in 2014. In May 2025, Duchovny married longtime partner Monique Pendleberry.
Outside of entertainment, Duchovny is a pescatarian, environmentally conscious, and a supporter of electric vehicle technology. He appeared at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival in support of Revenge of the Electric Car.
